Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture

Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture Vol. 6 No. 2 (2025) brings together a series of historically grounded studies that trace the development of Islamic thought, institutions, and sociopolitical dynamics across time and space in the Malay-Indonesian world. Articles revisit the legacy of Westphalia and the Bandung Conference as historical frameworks for contemporary Islamic diplomacy, examine local state responses to religious conflicts in post-authoritarian Indonesia, and explore the role of madrasah education in shaping Muslim identity during the colonial era. Other contributions delve into the integration of Islamic law in 15th-century Java through the influence of the Walisongo, reassess theories on the arrival of Islam in the archipelago in relation to evolving Islamic movements, and review the intellectual life of the pre-Wahhabi Hijaz with a focus on theological synthesis and transregional knowledge transmission. Collectively, these studies highlight the enduring importance of historical inquiry in understanding the plural trajectories of Islam in Southeast Asia.

Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of History and Culture is a peer-reviewed journal that is published twice a year in January and July by the Faculty of Islam Nusantara, Nahdlatul Ulama  University of Indonesia (Unusia) Jakarta.
