About the Journal

Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture is a peer-reviewed academic journal committed to fostering critical inquiry into the historical, cultural, and intellectual expressions of Islam across the Nusantara region. Rooted in the understanding that Islam in Southeast Asia has developed through layered encounters between local traditions and global Islamic thought, the journal serves as a platform for scholars to explore the rich and complex trajectories of Islamic life in the archipelago. It aims to illuminate the diverse forms in which Islamic ideas, institutions, and identities have taken shape, negotiated meaning, and asserted relevance within varied historical contexts.

The journal welcomes contributions that are grounded in rigorous empirical research—especially those that make use of underexplored or newly discovered primary sources—and that offer theoretical depth and innovation. Submissions that engage with broader historiographical debates or challenge established paradigms in the study of Islam and Muslim societies are particularly encouraged. By promoting both grounded historical scholarship and conceptual reflection, Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture seeks to bridge disciplinary boundaries and contribute to a more inclusive and plural understanding of Islamic history and culture.

Published twice annually—in January and July—by the Faculty of Islam Nusantara at the Nahdlatul Ulama University of Indonesia (Unusia), Jakarta, Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture positions itself as a vital forum for interdisciplinary engagement among historians, anthropologists, scholars of religion, cultural theorists, and others invested in the study of Islam and Muslim societies in maritime Southeast Asia. The journal is published in strategic collaboration with the Indonesian Historical Society (Masyarakat Sejarawan Indonesia, MSI) and the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum in Melaka, Malaysia reflecting its commitment to building transregional scholarly networks and fostering mutual intellectual exchange across Southeast Asia and the broader Muslim world.

Beginning in 2026, the journal will adopt a revised format and publication template. This shift marks a renewed commitment to editorial excellence, international accessibility, and the continual development of a globally relevant scholarly standard. The new format is designed not only to enhance the visibility and academic impact of the journal, but also to provide clearer guidance for authors and reviewers in line with best practices in academic publishing.

In all its endeavors, Islam Nusantara: Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture aspires to be more than a publication—it seeks to be a vibrant scholarly community that rethinks the historical and cultural contours of Islam in the region, while offering fresh insights into how Muslim societies have navigated questions of tradition, authority, identity, and change.
