Generative AI Policy

The Islam Nusantara Journal for the Study of Islamic History and Culture requires that all authors disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies during the writing process of their manuscript. The following policy is specifically concerned with the writing and composition of the manuscript and does not extend to the use of AI for data analysis, information retrieval, or research insights.

Permissible Use of AI Tools

  • Authors may use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies exclusively for improving the clarity, grammar, style, or readability of the manuscript.
  • These technologies must be used under strict human oversight. Authors are expected to thoroughly review, verify, and revise any AI-generated content, given that such tools may produce text that appears coherent but may be factually inaccurate, incomplete, or biased.
  • Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of all content submitted, regardless of any AI-assisted input.

Authorship and Attribution

  • Generative AI or AI-assisted tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors under any circumstances. Authorship carries legal, intellectual, and ethical responsibilities that can only be fulfilled by human contributors.

Disclosure Requirement

Authors who use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the manuscript preparation must include a formal disclosure in a separate section prior to the References in the initial submission. This disclosure will be published in the final version of the article. The section should be titled as follows:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process
Example statement:

During the preparation of this work, the author(s) utilized [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] for [SPECIFIC PURPOSE, e.g., enhancing language clarity]. After utilizing this tool/service, the author(s) conducted a comprehensive review and made necessary edits to the content, thereby assuming full responsibility for the final version of the published article.

  • This declaration is not required for the use of basic editorial tools, such as spelling or grammar checkers, thesauri, or reference managers.
  • If no generative AI or AI-assisted technology was used, no statement is necessary.

Editorial and Review Use

To uphold intellectual integrity, confidentiality, and authors' proprietary rights, the journal prohibits the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools (e.g., ChatGPT or similar services) by peer reviewers or editors during the manuscript evaluation and review process.

The journal is currently assessing the potential integration of ethically compliant and secure AI tools for editorial support and may update this policy accordingly in the future.
